My Ayurveda Paradise

OK, so like a million years ago I spent my two weeks in the Ayurveda Hospital here in Delhi.
It would be kind to put the name of the hospital. AVS in East Delhi. I'm too lazy to get up and get a better answer so, there ya go.

I checked in before 9 on the Monday.
Here is my room.

Yup, I even had a deck.

My couch if I were to bring an attendant or visitor.

The first view at night with the door shut. Kinda redundant.

This is the treatment room right off my room.

Treatment table. Covered with a cover to keep the cushion oil free.

The treatment table itself is very plastic. Here, they don't use padding. OUCH! But, me being a not tiny Indian girl, they had mercy and gave me a little more comfortable surface

Views from my deck below

This was where I did most of my walking. They had a back area, but the manager told me there were snakes out there. I was wimpy. Snakes are cool, but mostly with a handler.

The hospital halls looked similar to a regular hospital, except that they were nice and friendly feeling and not so institutional. That and this was not an enclosed building. SO down my hall about 6 feet was a total open wall that looked out the land out the back.

My first meal. A tray with 3 tinfoil bowls, 2 veggie bowls, an apple and wrapped roti on the far side. Plus a glass of usually butter milk.

The UNAVAILING!
Well, this is a different meal, but they were similar.
The 3 covered things were Rice, Usually white but some saffron. A bowl of Dal, a veggie dish of some sort, this one had salads of radishes and cucumbers. The fruit is papaya. The roti I usually put rice and dal on and ate it that way. It was quite tasty.

another one

Here was my favorite breakfast.

It is a tomato chutney with some sort of... and I don't recall the name, but it had veggies and a sauce os some sort. Almost pizza like. VERY tasty.

They did various oil, also Milk and rice treatments either for whole body or my knees. That is what I concentrated on.

My Days went like this.
6:30 AM up.
7:00 or so. Tea with 2 crackers. AWESOME tea.
8ish Breakfast
11 ish Soup. Usually a clear or brothy soup.
12:30 ish. Lunch
4:30 Tea--YEAH!
6:30 Soup
7:30 Supper
9:00 Bed time warm milk.

I had some herbal meds before and after most meals.
Treatments were usually 3 or so times a day.

The rest of the time I did a lot of reading, and resting as directed by my physician. The treatments make your body very tender internally and muscularly so they really want you to lay low and take in the treatments.

Here is a bird friend outside my window.

Ayurveda is a whole system of living. It is an ancient science that still stands up today. It is about maintaining your health instead of fixing it once something has gone wrong.

The Indian way of life is basically ayurvedic. In it's attitude towards health and taking care of them selves, in their cooking and spicing, etc. It tends to focus on having healthier, usually lower fat foods. The spices they use add flavor to the food and you really don't miss the other stuff. I never felt cheated while I was there. The food tasted fantastic. Joel had a few days of meals as well and concurred, so it wasn't that I was just REALLY hungry! :) The meals are balanced in types of foods, spices and the 6 tastes. They focus on balance of eating to help our bodies maintain balance. Proved to me that there really is something to this. We all hear variety is important and key to health. Ayurveda works on this. And, there are a good many healthy Indians running around; Strong, fit, etc.

The answer to the question of did it help is really complex.

I think if I could have made it to Karela for 4-5 weeks would have been a more complete program for me. There was no yoga here. They certainly answered my questions in some unexpected ways, but real answers and tried to be practical. The full 5 weeks would have been a good time for the full cleansing and rebuilding. Maybe some day.

It helped me confirm and gain some insight on its own and combined with past info. It also was good to have 2 weeks of full veg eating and little sugar. This was NOT hard. I totally expected to be going nuts. I had NO PMS cravings, that was worth the entry fee in itself in many ways. It showed me that I could do it and not die. When I got out I carried a strength about eating that I have mostly been able to retain. Cravings for sugar have been really minimized. I have been able to pass up a lot that I gave in to before with little regret.

I haven't lost a ton of weight, but I haven't been active either. That for me is HUGE. My knees have not magically healed to perfection. I didn't fully expect it, but would gladly take it. I didn't do a good job of laying low after I got home as they HEAVILY suggested. From other folks I have talked to who have done this say that, that does make a difference.

I have not been great about keeping up the oil application at home. PLUS it has been REALLY dry here. I believe that also a factor that really plays in to how I feel.

I did have days of feeling really good while there. I would like to go back to the spa and do the treatment there again. I felt AWESOME after I did that! Strong, fluid movements. Do they use a different oil? Is it the steam that helps keep my joints lubricated? These are things I need to figure out.

I gained some great tools. I think the diet was a great thing for me. I sure see why people do this every year or two to get them back on track.

I would totally go again. If I get the chance I need to put the priority on Karela. That is the home of Ayurveda and you probably get a bit more for your money there... hence the Yoga and longer stay for similar cost.

I'm sure I'm missing details that I promised to write about. So, let me know if those of you that asked see that I missed stuff.
